Peacemaker Clip Introduces the Suicide Squad Star’s New Team

A new clip from HBO Max’s Peacemaker introduces John Cena to his supporting cast, as the U.S. Government enlists him to take on “Project Butterfly.”

John Cena meets his team in a new clip from HBO Max’s Peacemaker series.

In Peacemaker, Cena’s Christopher Smith will put his killer instincts to the test to protect the United States of America. Recently released footage from the series reveals the moment the US government comes knocking on Peacemaker’s door, providing viewers with quick introductions to the show’s supporting cast. As Peacemaker sits on his couch, he talks to Chukwudi Iwuji’s Clemson Murn, who seemingly runs the unit. As Murn explains the details of the mission, he reintroduces Peacemaker to Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt, who will be his handler in the field. Murn then addresses Steve Agee’s John Economos, who runs tech and tactics. Finally, the scene highlights Danielle Brooks’ Leota Adebayo, a recent recruit tasked with doing “most everything else” for the unit.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Peacemaker has had to play nice with others. The character fought alongside Task Force X in The Suicide Squad as they sought to cover up “Project Starfish.” In the film’s final act, Smith betrayed his teammates to pursue Amanda Waller’s mission, severing his ties from the DC Extended Universe’s other baddies. It seems as though these actions will continue to haunt Peacemaker in his solo series, as The Suicide Squad holdover Harcourt flipped off the anti-hero when Murn reintroduced the two. As explained in the clip , Peacemaker’s unique skill set makes him an ideal candidate to take on a domestic situation known as “Project Butterfly.”

Created by James Gunn, Peacemaker will pick up after the events of The Suicide Squad. In a previous interview, Gunn stated that out of all the villains that appeared in The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker had the most difficult time meshing with the team. “John and I talked a lot about the character,” Gunn said. “Where he is, how he feels — you think that Polka-Dot Man’s the one who’s the outsider, but Polka-Dot Man starts to feel a part of the group. Peacemaker has a harder time with that. He’s actually the most disconnected of all those characters.”

Though Cena’s new allies seem ready for action in this clip, they’re not the only characters that will be supporting him in Peacemaker. The series will also include Vigilante, a district attorney with limited healing abilities and an intense arsenal of weapons. Played by Freddie Stroma, director James Gunn describes the hero as Peacemaker‘s oddest character. Also absent from the footage is Eagly, an American bald eagle that responds to Peacemaker’s commands. The two have been seen in multiple clips for the series, fighting alongside Cena as he takes on butterflies such as Nhut Le’s Judomaster.

Peacemaker arrives on Jan. 13, 2022, on HBO Max.
