The Witcher Season 2 Featurette Shines the Spotlight on Ciri

The featurette for Netflix’s The Witcher Season 2 shines a light on Ciri’s journey from lost princess of Cintra to a fighter trained at Kaer Morhen.

Netflix’s The Witcher Season 2 featurette offered fans a deeper look into what it took for Ciri to begin her journey as a monster hunter in training.

The featurette begins with Ciri asking Geralt of Rivia what they’ll be doing in the witcher’s home of Kaer Morhen as it flashes to scenes of her rigorous training. Geralt warns her that training is dangerous. “I feel like Season 1, for me, I was learning so much,” actor Freya Allan says. “I’m constantly learning and that’s never gonna go away, ’cause you’re always around new people.” She goes on to say, “I’m really excited because I felt in Season 1 that Ciri’s literally just running away from her past. She’s now seeing where she wants to go in her future and that is she wants to be a fighter. And you really get to see that she is determined because she would like to become a witcher.”

The Witcher Season 2 sees Geralt and Ciri travel to Kaer Morhen for the princess’ protection amongst the few remaining witchers. As the princess of Cintra, multiple parties across the Continent are eager to find her and use her position or the power of the Elder Blood for their own gains, leaving it up to Geralt to make sure they don’t get their hands on her. Ciri, however, wants to take matters into her own hands and demands that she be trained to become a witcher.

The actor reflected on the difficulty of learning sword-fighting routines. The featurette showed Allan behind-the-scenes practicing the art of combat and swordplay just like her character had to do. Allan was also bold enough to actually do the obstacle course scenes herself in Season 2, Episode 3, “What Is Lost,” and got knocked off of a beam and onto the ground.

With regard to the intense training, Allan previously told CBR, “She’s had this determination, this stubbornness to succeed, to get what she wants. In that obstacle course, she wants to be able to complete it and prove Lambert and Coën wrong.” She went on to add, “something that was interesting to explore with regards to her training and wanting to become a witcher is that it really does become [about] — apart from the fact she also does want to fit in with the witchers — genuinely wanting to be a fighter.”

Season 3 of The Witcher has already been confirmed and it will largely adapt author Andrzej Sapkowski’s Time of Contempt. With the revelations about Ciri in the Season 2 finale and the foretold dark riders of the Wild Hunt coming, Ciri will need all the power she can get.

Season 2 of The Witcher is available for streaming on Netflix.
