Tommy Bowe says it’s difficult to find time to exercise due to Ireland AM schedule

Tommy Bowe admits he finds it difficult to find the time for fitness because of his work on Ireland AM.

The rugby player turned broadcaster still has a huge passion for exercise ever since swapping the pitch for early mornings on breakfast TV.

But the dad-of-two reveals that the early starts to wake up the nation on Virgin Media Television has been a real “eye-opener” for him.

Tommy tells RSVP Live: “I find it difficult to find the time to make a routine to push myself and get fit and work hard at my fitness, it’s something that has been a real eye-opener for me since the end of my rugby career, particularly with the early mornings because I’m up at 4 or 5 in the morning.

“It’s hard to get motivated to go to the gym after that.”

As the New Year gets underway, lots of people are looking for motivation to kickstart a new fitness regime following an indulgent Christmas.

Tommy’s tip is to make sure to set time aside for exercise every day as this helps him to stay focused.

The Ireland AM presenter is also aware of the impact exercise has on his mental well-being, as it helps him to be in a better mood when he is at home with his wife Lucy and their children Emma and Jamie.

He continues: “I find it’s important for me to put it in the diary, even a 20 minute or half an hour block.

“Once it’s in the diary I feel I kind of have to stick with it. If it’s jus the exercise bike, going to the gym, taking the dog for a walk, or going for a run, I force myself to do it.

“It is hard, but I think the benefit of doing it is great and I feel so much better after. I’m less cranky with the kids when I get home, I get that frustration out that a lot of people have these days with everything that is going on and the bad news.”

Sport has undeniably been a huge part of Tommy’s lives, and he wants his children to follow in his footsteps in terms of having an active lifestyle.

“Sport and fitness is definitely something that I would encourage Emma and Jamie to get involved in,” he says.

“I think for children, the pandemic has been so difficult for them with their indoor classes and things like that being cancelled.

“From my point of view, exercise is so important for children. I have my daughter in swimming, in ballet classes, and plenty of things to help her get active and socialise with her friends too.

“I’ll also take her down to the park so she can meet with friends and get fresh air, things like that.

“Jamie is still too young at the moment, but sport was such a huge part of my life growing up so I’d like to try to have something similar for my kids.”

Tommy has been a hit with Virgin Media viewers since joining the Ireland AM team back in 2020.

Last year saw a raft of changes take place within the TV station, as a number of high-profile presenters exit their roles.

But Tommy doesn’t worry about job security and is grateful to be part of the long-running breakfast show.

“Listen, I come from a rugby background and this is all very normal to me with contracts and people coming and going,” he says.

“There’s definitely been a shake-up and things have changed, like Muireann [O’Connell] moving across to Ireland AM and it’s added maybe a bit of freshness and a bit of change to the show. Maybe the bosses felt we needed that.

“I feel like I’m just one of the players on the pitch of a rugby team, we just have to get on with whatever happens behind the scenes.

“From my point of view, I think it’s really important to have gratitude. I’m just so happy to be given the opportunity to work on Ireland AM and when you see things like [people leaving the station] it makes you realise that these things can change at any time. You just have to do the best job you can and see where you go.”
